PORIRUA
Domestic Violence Hui   Saturday 2911/14 to Sunday 30/11/14  12 noon (2 day event)
Waitangirua Porirua City
The purpose of the hui is to hold a noho for men and their sons around domestic violence. The kaupapa for the event is around fathers being a positive role model for their sons and looks at issues such as saying not to domestic violence. The objective that we want to achieve is a better understanding of the issues surrounding domestic violence. Reducing domestic violence in the Porirua area and the promotion of non-violence during White Ribbon Week. The event begins at 12noon Saturday 29th November and finishes the next morning at 8.00am Sunday 30th November 2014. The agenda begins with a powhiri from our local kaumatua. Followed by mihimihi, house rules then lunch. We then prep and light the hangi and the preparing the kai. When the hangi is in the ground we have a circuit training. We put a theme around the hangi and circuit training, called being a “Protector and Provider”. Providing for your whanau that is feeding your whanau (hangi) and protecting your whanau (circuit training) which has a boxing and martial arts component. Followed by a swim at the pools to freshen up but also to teach the roopu about water safety, because Maori and Pacific Island men feature high for water accidents. We have a master diver who teaches water safety skills and the laws that govern the taking of kai moana. (Provider)Through “whanaungatanga” working together teaching our sons some positive skills by using Maori kaupapa, surrounding our roopu with Maori settings such as carvings, and artwork, which show cases our tupuna, and our proud Polynesian history. After the pools we return to pull out the hangi to feed the roopu and our guest speakers. Our guest speakers will interact with the roopu talking about their experiences, giving key messages, the roopu will be encouraged to participate by asking questions, everyone is respected and we insure that there is a safe environment for our roopu to express themselves. This will take us into the late evening where down time will be spent watching a movie. “Once were warriors” After that the roopu will have a moe in the wharenui called Ukaipo Hiato. We wake the next morning around 6am where there will be a Mau Taiaha demonstration. The men will also cook the breakfast for their partners, wives, tamariki, and invited guests, who arrive around 7.00am. We conclude with a “poroporoaki” open floor for korero and thankyou. Then completing the noho with a karakia at around 8.00am. “One of the key messages is about engaging boys and men to prevent violence against women can make a difference. Men have a positive role to play in helping stop violence against women.” (Family Violence Clearinghouse Issue Paper 5 November 2013. Garth Baker) For more information mathew@maraeroa.maori.nz
