Name of Event: An Empty Fridge is part of Family Violence
Date: Monday, 29th October
Time: 0900-1730 daily
Venue: Massey Library
Descriptions: An Empty Fridge is part of Family Violence – Tamariki reclaiming their story as part of White Ribbon 2018. 26 October saw the opening of the “Behind Closed Doors” exhibition at Massey Library.
The focus of this exhibit is on the wider situations that foster family violence rather than the actual acts themselves. What students experience in their own life goes well beyond crime statistics; for example, the fridge door that opens on “no food here”, or that has an eviction notice on its front, are part of what these young people experience as family violence.
Tiaria Fletcher, Manager of the WAVES Trust, explained what the exhibit is about: “This is part of the White Ribbon Campaign against Family Violence. The students have taken our history of being colonised, the legacy and pain of it, and reclaimed the story for themselves, in their own way”. She added “it is also about hope for a better future.”
Community Waitakere, WAVES and the students of Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Kōtuku (in Rānui) have joined together, in support of the White Ribbon Campaign, resulting in this “Kei tua o te Tatau – Behind Closed Doors” exhibition. After starting its journey at Massey Library, it will be traveling to several West Auckland venues until early December. With thanks to the Henderson-Massey Local Board for providing funding for this journey. Some of the artworks will also be incorporated by the students into their school production later this year.

Description: White Ribbon Day is the international day for the elimination of men’s violence towards women. White Ribbon aims to end men’s violence towards women by encouraging men to lead by example and talk to other men.
Christchurch Rocks participation in this is to paint as many white ribbon rocks to place down on the ground in a shape of a ribbon. For CHCH our White Ribbon event is on the 10th November, at Phillipstown Hub. The plan is we will be there at 10 to set up and start placing the rocks down ready for 11.30 start. People can bring their rocks down from 10.30 onward, our admin will be doing the count as they all come in. You can come in register your rocks and place them down. We aim to have them down ready for a final picture and number count at 1.30pm. After this people are welcome to take some and share them by hiding them at your parks. What is left over will be taken by Shirley Project who are looking at a permanent place for the rocks to be placed either as a foot path or a wall feature. Very exciting!
For the official date, 25th November, we encourage painting ribbons to continue until then….when you are done take a video of all your hard work with a final count and post it here! We have invited our fellow rockers in other towns and country to join us and will be asked to do the same! If you have any questions please go to the Facebook page to contact the organisers.
